Our brilliance, our juiciness, our spiciness, is all mixed up with our craziness and our confusion, and therefore it doesn’t do any good to try to get rid of our so-called negative aspects, because in that process we also get rid of our basic wonderfulness.

People travel to wonder at the height of the mountains, at the huge waves of the seas, at the long course of the rivers, at the circular motion of the stars, and yet they pass by themselves without wondering. 

Everyone seems to have an opinion about the single mother of  six children who decided to have eight more.   Certainly, everyone is entitled to their opinion.  But what I could not understand was the visciousness that accompaniend many people’s opinion.

Thank goodness I am not the only person who thinks that we need to dial down the nastiness when we are judging other people’s actions.   One woman who was appearing on a talk show said it best: “We can hold people accountable without holding them in contempt.”

That’s good advice to keep it in mind when dealing with people who we disagree with.

The answers to your questions are never beyond your reach. 

If you have to eat two frogs, eat the ugliest one first.

If you have talent, use it in every which was possible.  Don’t hoard it.  Don’t dole it out like a miser.  Spend it lavishly like a millionaire intent on going broke.

This book is a  powerful account of both Afghan history and a heart-warming testament to the power of friendship.  Mariam and Laila, the two main characters, are two of the toughest women I have ever encountered in literature.  They are potent reminders that there is always more in you than meets the eye.
